Description
Before a Tamil home wakes, a woman steps outside and draws a kolam at the threshold: one unbroken line looping around a grid of dots. Vidiyal is that hour, dawn, when the sky hasn't yet decided between violet and rose.
Handwoven in pure silk on a traditional Kanchipuram loom, the body is a shot silk that moves between deep violet and magenta with every fold. Across it sit sikku kolam butas woven in zari. Each is a single line weaving around its dots, just as it would be drawn on a doorstep. The border stays in the same violet magenta, set apart only by three fine silver zari stripes, a quiet frame that lets the kolams speak.
Then comes the pallu, where the kolam takes over. The interlaced loops repeat tone on tone across the entire pallu in a dense, rhythmic lattice that glimmers rather than shouts. Up close it reads as pattern. From a distance it looks like a courtyard covered in morning kolams.
A kolam is drawn to welcome good fortune in. This saree is made for griha pravesh, engagements, festive mornings and every day that marks a new beginning. Made to be handed down one day.
